FAQs

Unfortunately, sometimes one bad experience can sometimes lead to your pup avoiding their meals, also known as food aversion. pooches and kitties may refuse to eat food with a taste, texture or smell associated with the bad experience and continue to refuse to eat it even when they are feeling better. Certain cats and dogs are pickier than others and some may need more time to adjust to new things. Our pet pawrents have given us really great feedback about the palatability of our meals, and we believe that we are quite different to anything else on the market
This depends on age and breed size. Generally for small or medium breed puppies, they’re considered adults after one year of age. At this point you should be feeding adult dog food. Toy breeds can mature as young as 9 months of age. Large breed puppies (weighing over 20kg as adults) can take up to 24 months to mature to adulthood. Until then it’s important to feed an appropriate puppy food tailored to larger breeds to ensure their needs are met. If in doubt, check with your vet. Why transition from puppy food to adult dog food? Puppy formulas are tailored to support growth and typically have higher levels of protein and fat. An adult dog has a lower metabolic and calorie requirement. Continuing to feed your adult dog puppy food can lead to unnecessary weight gain. If you’re feeding an all life stage food, this means it meets the nutrient requirements to support both puppy growth and adult maintenance. Once your puppy reaches adulthood, you’ll need to reduce the amount of food. Check the feeding guidelines. How to switch from puppy food to dog food Take it slow We recommend transitioning your puppy to adult food over 7-10 days. Start by introducing 10% of the adult food with 90% of the puppy food and gradually increasing the ratio of adult food to puppy food over the 10 days. Changing food gradually will help avoid any tummy upsets. You should expect some stool variation during the transition. Every dog (and puppy) is different, so monitor how your dog responds and adjust how gradually you transition. If you’re moving from a significantly different food, e.g. a vegetarian diet to a meat diet or a heavy cereal puppy food to a high protein food, you’ll want to transition even slower. How many times should I feed my dog As puppies you’ll have been feeding 3-5 meals a day. There’s no set rule but in general adult dogs are fed twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening.
You can check with your vet if you’re unsure. Most kittens should remain on kitten food up to 12 months. Larger cats, like Maine Coon’s for example, reach maturity later so shouldn’t move to adult food until 18-24 months. When transitioning to adult cat food, do so gradually over 7-10 days to avoid any tummy issues. It’s normal to see some stool variation during this time. Every cat is different so take things at your cats pace.
Feeding the correct amount for your cat or dog is important in maintaining good health, however the amount varies according to size, body condition, age and lifestyle. Use our feeding calculator to guide you on the feeding quantities.
Anywhere you like ? Show it off proudly for all to see! Keep our recipes in a cool, dry place. Ensure you reseal the dry food and treat bags after use, or you can keep your opened wet food in the fridge covered for 2-3 days.
To avoid an upset tummy, it’s best to switch you cat or dog gradually from their old food over a period of 5-7 days where possible.
Every cat and dog is different, and we recommend transitioning over a period of 7 to 10 days if you’re new to Scrumbles. It’s normal for tummies to adjust during this time and you may notice stool variation. Many customers see a result within the first few days of use, however it can take a couple of months for full results to be seen.
Once opened, please store your Scrumbles in a lidded container in your fridge, and make sure you use within 72 hours.

Scrumbles wet food can be frozen but we recommend transferring the contents into a freezer-safe container and using within three months. Each pack whilst unopened has a shelf life of 12 months from the date it was made so freezing usually isn’t necessary. Avoid freezing dry food. Opt for an air tight container in a cool, dry space instead.
Probiotics are microorganisms found in your pet’s body. You might have heard of probiotics referred to as “good” and “friendly” bacteria. Probiotics help digestion and balance your pet’s gut flora. A lot of people confuse the two, but Prebiotics and Probiotics are not the same thing. Each play different roles for your pet’s digestive system. We add probiotics to all of our dry food recipes for happy tums and pick-up-able poops. Gut bacteria really are your pooch’s and kitty’s best friend, and have a big part to play in your dog’s overall health. If you’d like to know a bit more about pre/probiotics and how they affect your pet’s health, why not have a look at one of our blogs?
“Natural” means that our ingredients have nothing added to them and they have their natural composition. Natural doesn’t always mean better. For example salt and sugar are what we call naughty naturals. Don’t worry we don’t add sugar or salt to our recipes, and always provide a clear breakdown of our ingredients on the back of the packaging or on our website. We use natural ingredients for our recipes but include added vitamins and minerals, to be FEDIAF compliant and ensure our complete recipes are nutritionally balanced. We have to add vitamins and minerals as some vitamins and minerals simply aren’t available as a natural form and those that are can vary. We do not add vitamins and minerals to our treats as these are complementary which allows us these to be 100% natural, like our delicious Softies training treats and our Calming Nibbles. Our best seller dental dog treats has an added clinically proven dental ingredient Sodium Hexametaphosphate
We use free run chicken and turkey which is highly digestible for cats and dogs. All of the meat used comes from a slaughterhouse intended for human consumption (declared high quality and disease free). Contrary to popular myths, this isn’t bad meat that’s got feathers and beaks. UK laws protect against this so you can rest assured that you’re getting the excess meat that we as humans don’t need, kind of like wonky vegetables that supermarkets are now selling. Just as nutritious. If you’d like to read a bit more about our recipes, you can check them out here !
We’re very picky about our pet food and even pickier about who we work with. All our suppliers are subject to an approval process with rigorous checks throughout so that we’re happy they meet our requirements. We implement a number of measures to ensure we receive no GMO raw materials; Risk assessments, written declarations from suppliers to confirm no GMO materials are supplied to us and audits, to ensure full traceability of our supply chain. So in a nutshell no 🙂

Like lots of humans, dogs are creatures of habit. They thrive on knowing what to expect and love to have a routine. . An anxious dog will feel better if you make sure that their walks, meals and all aspects of their daily life are as routine as possible. Some dogs are more anxious than others and this is often linked to missed socialisation opportunities during puppyhood. The first few months of a pup’s life are called the ‘socialisation period.’ This is when they need to experience a wide range of sounds, sights and situation so that they learn to take them in their stride as they grow up. Unfortunately, dogs who miss out on being properly socialised can end up with a range of fears or phobias. If your pooch is a sensitive soul and needs some help to calm down their anxiety, why not try our calming dog treats nibbles. They’re perfect to calm anxious dogs ahead of stressful situations, like car journeys and during fireworks season. Our Nibbles are gently baked in the UK with calming ingredients. Shaped like a giant chocolate button (but with no naughty chocolate in them!), these are great for large breed and small breed dogs alike.
We have a couple of recipes that are suitable for dogs with pancreatitis. Our dry salmon dog food recipe is suitable, as well as our Gnashers dental dog treats. Always check with your vet if your dog has a health condition so that they can advise if a food is suitable and if you’re new to Scrumbles (or any other recipe) please transition your dog over gradually to avoid upset tummies.
Obesity is sadly a common problem in dogs with many risk factors outside of what your dog eats that can contribute to the problem e.g. genetics, lack of exercise, health issues and age. The most common contributor is from overfeeding and overtreating. We have a handy feeding guideline to help you figure out the right amount to feed your pooch and if you like to add daily treats to your dog’s diet, please reduce the feeding amounts by 10%. If you’re looking to help your dog lose weight, reducing fat levels is not necessarily the solution. Lower fat recipes have higher levels of carbohydrates which can worsen obesity. We recommend starting with feeding guidelines to prevent overfeeding and as hard as it is stepping away from the treat jar. You can add some more exercise to your dog’s daily routing to help burn off excess fat in a healthy way. Please always look to reduce weight gradually. Drastic weight loss is dangerous and not healthy. Our feeding calculator will help you figure out a guideline for your pooch’s daily calorie intake. If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If you are looking for a low fat option that is suitable for pancreatitis, our dry salmon dog food recipe is our lowest fat recipe. We also have our dental chews, Gnashers that are suitable and fully plant based with lots of fibre. If you’d like some nutritional advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our customer team hello@scrumbles.co.uk
If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic dog food or cat food, then Scrumbles is appropriate. All of our recipes are hypoallergenic and designed for easy digestion. We use a limited number of quality ingredients. Hypoallergenic effectively means “less likely to cause an allergic reaction”. We avoid common allergens like beef, pork, dairy and gluten. If your cat or dog has a particular allergy or intolerance, be sure to check our ingredients on the back of pack.
Sterilised pets initially see a fall in their metabolism which means they’re at greater risk of weight gain, so feeding guidelines and calorie control is key. Additionally they’re at a greater risk of developing kidney stones, so animal protein and hydration is vital. We have no added salt (sodium chloride) in our recipes, all named ingredients are gluten free avoiding maize and focusing on meat first. Our meat content is high, delivering essential amino acids that cats need and making our food highly digestible. We additionally add probiotics once the food is cooled which can help with weight management and supports digestive health.
Our recipes have a high meat content, low level of carbohydrate and additionally added probiotics for digestive health. We also avoid added sugars and salts. We have many customers who’s pets have issues like this. However as every pet is an individual and we don’t know your pets history, we recommend you speak to your vet first. And when changing foods, it’s really important to transition slowly to avoid causing any upset tummies!
We specialise in soothing sensitive tummies and you can choose from any of our recipes as they are suitable for all life stages. To help keep sensitive stomaches happy, we always recommend to transition slowly over a period of 7 to 10 days for any new recipe. We are committed to helping the world around us and thoughtful about our impact choosing only to work with suppliers that share our ethos. How our food is made: We’re mindful of recycling when manufacturing our food and chose our manufacturing partner thoughtfully. The plant reaches a 98% total recycling figure with aims to further reduce the remaining 2% of waste sent to landfill. How we work: Our office is mobile with our mindful approach travelling with us. We operate paperlessly with the few bits that are printed on recycled paper. 99% of all our deliveries are via earth friendly DHL and pedals with the final 1% moving across shortly! When we travel, we mainly stick to public transport. When choosing the packaging for our food, we were overwhelmed by the amount of plastic in the market. We saw that a few paper bags existed but found that these compromised on the quality of the food. E.g. where there are high meat contents the lack of moisture barrier can cause the food to go rancid, which would not a happy cat or dog make! Our bags are packaged in a paper/plastic mix with a minimal layer of plastic to maintain freshness. We’re working closely with our lovely packaging suppliers to develop an earth friendly alternative that doesn’t compromise on the quality of the food. Watch this space as an exciting alternative will shortly be available that still allows us to give you yummy good food. We’re naturally curious and constantly evolving our thinking to see how we can make further improvements.
As animal lovers, we don’t participate in any invasive animal testing and we hope to encourage others to do the same. Our recipes are designed to put cats and dogs first and come with approval from Smudge, Boo and a few of their furriends, who have taste tested in the comfort of their own home with us. We include meat in our foods as this is critical to deliver optimal nutrition for cats and dogs. For example, cats are obligate carnivores and need meat protein. The nutritional requirements for cats and dogs make vegetarian and vegan diets inappropriate. Our ultimutt dream is for the clean meat movement to become accessible for cats and dogs.
We’re a proud B Corp and donate 1% of our sales towards environemental and social causes to help those who need us most. We work closely with the wonderful people at All Dogs Matter and The Cat Welfare Group feeding their floofsters and raising awareness and funds to support the great work they do. Please check them out!
As animal lovers, animal welfare is close to our hearts. We test all of our recipes on our family pets, Smudge and Boo and then share it with select friends and family before signing off. Scrumbles are listed on the PETA website for “Non-Animal tested Companion Animal Food” We’re also members of the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) a leading trade organisation which monitors and influences animal welfare within the industry. We’re keen to guarantee adventures for many more generations of cats and dogs and as well as treading more lightly on the planet, we work with key charity partners to help us achieve this like All Dogs Matter. A lot of our products contain meat and we’re conscious about the meat we use. Our recent life cycle assessment showed that animal agriculture has the greatest environmental impact. In order to get the full spectrum of amino acids, cats and dogs need animal protein but there are efforts to minimise our impact here. We use human grade ingredients as part of our raw materials which are surplus to the human food chain due to commercial reasons. We try to source all of our meats from the UK – our range of wet dog food is all British meat and we’re working to solely source British meat for our range of dry cat and dog food as well. All the meat we use is free run rather than from caged animals and comply with the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes to ensure high animal welfare standards.

We manufacture all of our recipes in the UK and Ireland and operate under FEDIAF guidelines. We choose to use meat that would otherwise go to waste to minimise our impact. Click here for more information on our ingredients
